PULLMAN -- For Cougar o-lineman Wade Jacobson, it was a nerve-wracking 24 hours following the draft.…
Wade, Travis wait while Tuel, Wilson gear up
Tuel's good friend and former Cougar batterymate, Marquess Wilson, went to Chicago in the seventh round of the draft, with the 236th overall pick, and Bears management sounds thrilled to have him.
Bears coach Mark Trestman told the Chicago Tribune that Wilson's messy departure from WSU was indicative of "a young guy making a very, very small mistake that put him in a position that got him in trouble ..."
He added, "He's a good kid with a big upside. He's come to the right place. He's come to a locker room where we have players and coaches that will set him straight right from the beginning and get him going the right direction. It's an exciting opportunity for us to grow a young man, to allow him to mature off the field as well as on it and the upside as a talent, we're very excited about it."
Bears GM Phil Emery said, "We felt that the point in the draft that a person of this kind of talent deserved a second chance. His biggest sin is he walked out. He made a young decision. He's just 20 … this was a good person who made an immature decision … He's ready to roll. We're very excited he's with the Chicago Bears."
Two other Cougars expected to sign free agent deals are offensive lineman Wade Jacobson and defensive end/outside linebacker Travis Long.
Jacobson responded to a CF.C text late Saturday saying there was no update yet on his status. Long has not talked with media since the Apple Cup and he had not tweeted an update on his situation as of press time late Saturday.
Throughout last season, Long was widely viewed as the Cougar with the best chance of being drafted. But a serious late-season knee injury high-centered that forecast.
