Bears put Bush on IR; sign Bell

The Chicago Bears have placed RB Michael Bush on injured reserve with a rib injury. To take his roster spot, the team signed RB Kahlil Bell.

The Chicago Bears have officially placed running back Michael Bush (ribs) on injured reserve. Bush was first injured in Week 13 against the Seattle Seahawks. He came back in Week 14 for one carry, yet the ribs didn't not respond and he was held out for the remainder of the contest.

Last week, in a crucial home game against the Green Bay Packers, the Bears chose to put Bush on the active roster, despite the fact he clearly wasn't healthy enough to play. All this while QB Josh McCown was a healthy scratch.

The Bears sorely missed Bush, a great short-yardage runner, against Green Bay, failing twice to punch the ball in from the 1-yard line.

Bush appeared in 13 games with one start for Chicago in 2012, rushing for 411 yards and five touchdowns on 114 carries (3.6 ypc) adding nine catches for 83 receiving yards (9.2 ypr).

To take his spot on the 53-man roster, the Bears signed RB Kahlil Bell. Bell -- who was waived by Chicago earlier in the season after refusing to take a pay cut, and then re-signed a month ago, before being waived again -- was recently cut by the New York Jets.

Bell has appeared in 25 games with three starts over four seasons with Chicago (2009-12) and the New York (2012) totaling 589 rushing yards on 131 carries (4.5 ypc) and 150 receiving yards and one touchdown on 22 receptions (6.8 ypr).

The Bears made roster moves yesterday as well, placing DT Matt Toeaina (chest) on injured reserve and elevating T Cory Brandon from the practice squad.

Brandon has spent the last nine weeks of the season on the Bears practice squad. The 6-7, 324-pound offensive lineman entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with Tampa Bay out of Oklahoma in 2011. He signed with Chicago this past June and was with the team during the 2012 preseason.

Toeaina has appeared in three games for the Bears this season with two starts. In six seasons with Chicago, Toeaina has started 24 of 36 games played, recording 66 tackles, two sacks and one fumble recovery.
