Bears sign Tim Jennings to two-year deal

The Bears today announced the team has agreed to terms on a two-year contract with cornerback Tim Jennings, meaning the club likely won't be pursuing any big-name free agent corners.

The Chicago Bears agreed to terms with CB Tim Jennings on a two-year contract this afternoon.

Jennings has appeared in 85 career games in six NFL seasons with the Indianapolis Colts (2006-09) and Chicago Bears (2010-11). During that time, Jennings has compiled 310 tackles with seven interceptions, 42 pass break ups, five forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries in 85 games played (49 starts).

In two seasons with Chicago, Jennings has registered 153 tackles, six tackles for losses, three interceptions, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries, while appearing in all 32 games (28 starts).

While Jennings doesn't possess the prototypical size (5-8, 185) of a Cover 2 cornerback, his toughness and intelligence has made him a starter the past two years opposite Charles Tillman. He can struggle at times in man coverage but he understands his duties in zone coverage and is strong against the run.

The Bears still have two other cornerbacks set to become free agents – Corey Graham and Zack Bowman – so this deal may not preclude them from signing another free agent corner. Yet it's now highly unlikely they will be pursuing the big names like Brandon Carr, Cortland Finnegan and Carlos Rogers.

Re-signing Jennings also makes it very unlikely the team will bring back Graham, who wants an opportunity to play defense full time.

For now though, it appears the team will go forward with Jennings and Tillman as the starters and D.J. Moore as the nickel back. They could add also add a developmental player in the draft.
