Maybe im jumping the gun here and being irrational but this seems like a pretty bad start to a really important FA.
Arron Afflalo is a guy they seemed really interested in and Denver traded for him with an role player and the 56th pick. The Bulls definitely had better assets to get that deal done. Maybe it was AAs $7.5M contract but he was really their last option if all else failed in FA. You could have traded for him and used him as a potential sign and trade piece if you were to get one of the big FA players. If not, you had a guy who can create offense for you.
First let me say that ive probably only watches two college games this past season. I really dont know anything outside of Jabari. Then during the draft you trade the 16th and 19th picks for some pasty white jump shooter at 11? This was supposedly the deepest draft in a long time and if a early 2nd round draft pick held value like a 1st round 20s pick, is it really worth the trade to only move up 5 spots for a guy who seems like a spot up shooter? Werent they trying to bring in on the ball scorers? From what i read, its really questioned if he can be anything more than just a shooter at the next level when youre going against more athletic and lengthy players. They said he cant defend but its ok because Thibs will mask that. Thibs never masked the defensive flaws of Carlos Boozer, Kyle Korver or a healthy Derrick Rose, when rookie guards were blowing past him in the playoffs. If this guy cant defend, he'll end up on the bench in crunch time like Boozer and theyll be back to lacking scorers when you really need a bucket. As a team they have a handful of great defenders and Thibs knows great team D but its hard to mask a guys flaws when hes being spun in circles.
Good for GarPax, this was supposedly their guy and its not just BS like most teams say after they draft a guy. Theyve been watching him for like 3 years. They say now they only have to pay 1 rookie instead of 2 so that gives them more money for a big time FA but whats the difference when you compare how much youre going to pay the 11th pick and Anthony Randolphs $1.8M, compared to #16 and #19? Oh and they sent a future 2nd to Denver. Apparently you cant even trade Randolph for 60 days so he cant even be used in a sign and trade. I just dont understand. If they amnesty Boozer, theyre only sitting around 11-13M from what i read. Youre not signing melo for that. I dont care how much he claims he wants to win.
Do you think the Timberwolves are interested in trading Love for Taj Gibson, Tony Snell and whoever else when they didnt even want Klay Thompson and David Lee? 30% of the cap going to Derrick Rose, who no one knows how he will play over the next few years, would LeBron want to join another team where he'd look like the only guy who can get you a basket late in games? Maybe its the pessimist in me and growing used to being disappointed with the Bulls FAs but i just feel like its gonna be the same old thing. Not saying the guys in charge arent trying, i know they are and at the end of the day its the FAs decisions but man....this doesnt look good.
Wade is not going anywhere and I bet dollar to donuts LeFraud doesn't either. I do like the Bulls getting McBuckets last night though. Finally got someone who can flat out score and he is not as bad defensively as his rep is though he really needs to work on that part of his game if he wants to survive under Thibs. Save some cap space except they pick up Anthony Randolph which makes no sense unless they are lining up a sign and trade with him as one of the pieces.
I agree with you, i think they both stay. All 3 opt out and resign for less. Ric Bucher(sp) was spewing some nonsense last night about Toronto wanting to do a S&T w/ Miami sending Kyle Lowry to the Heat and them getting back their dino. Oh and they would use the extra cap space to sign Melo. WtF is going on here?
I think i posted above about the cap space with the trade last night. With AR coming in the trade, they put an addition $1M on the books. I try to have faith in this front office because i feel like theyve done well and as much as they could but last night was a tough one for me. Didnt like it. I just saw Bernsy posted an article with a headline for optimism. I'll read it and hope he talks me off the ledge. http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2014/06/27/bernstein-b ulls-working-on-bigger-things/
Im really trying to stay optimistic that theyll land Melo but im just used to disappointment when it comes to the big named FAs and Chicago. Guess we have to wait a couple weeks and see.
