| Bears Acquire Defensive End from Bucs by John M. Crist of BearReport.com, October 16, 2009 at 9:29pm ET Gaines Adams Profile If there was any doubt whatsoever that Bears general manager Jerry Angelo is pushing all his chips to the middle of the table and going for broke in 2009, that doubt was eliminated Friday evening. Angelo sent a second-round pick in next year's draft to Tampa Bay for defensive end Gaines Adams. Adams, a 6-5, 260-pounder, was was the fourth-overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. In 37 career games with the Buccaneers, the former Clemson Tiger has recorded 86 tackles, 13.5 sacks, two interceptions, 10 passes defensed and one defensive touchdown. So far this season, Adams has been credited with 10 tackles, 1.0 sack and two passes defensed. A starter in Tampa Bay at right end, Adams will likely be used in Chicago as a pass-rushing specialist off the bench. Starters Alex Brown and Adewale Ogunleye have both played incredibly well so far in 2009, combining for 7.0 sacks and also defending the run capably. Mark Anderson, who was a pass-rushing phenom as a rookie with 12.0 sacks, has only 7.0 sacks in 34 games since then – Chicago has even used him at the tackle position this year. The irony here is that while the Bears had a terrible time getting after the enemy quarterback consistently each of the last two seasons, this year they are tied for fourth in the NFL with 14 sacks. New defensive line coach Rod Marinelli has earned rave reviews so far, and the results on the field have been noticeable, so maybe Adams, who hasn't lived up to his potential just yet, will blossom under Marinelli's tutelage. |
