OLB Lance Briggs: Falcons Use Offensive Personnel Wisely

Lance Briggs Profile

The weak-side linebacker tends to cover the running back on passing downs in Chicago's version of the Cover-2 defense, but perhaps Lance Briggs won't have to worry about that too much this week since Atlanta's Michael Turner has caught just one ball so far this season – and only six all of last year.

Not so fast, says Briggs, as the Falcons do a great job getting the most out of their offensive personnel from play to play.

"In their passing situations, they put Jerious Norwood in there a lot," Briggs said Thursday before practice at Halas Hall, "and he's fast. He takes off a lot. He gets down the field, so he creates another list of problems for us linebackers."

Norwood, Atlanta's third-down back and kick returner, caught 36 passes a year ago and has six receptions so far in 2009, and his home-run ability makes him a perfect change-up to the brute strength Turner brings to the table on the ground.

"They do the things that suit them well," Briggs said. "They give the ball to Michael Turner, throw the ball to Jerious Norwood, throw the ball to Roddy White [and] Tony Gonzalez. They spread the ball around. They have a great scheme."

White is an exposive wide receiver and Gonzalez might be the best tight end in NFL history, so Briggs and Co. will have their hands full every time Matt Ryan drops back in the pocket – even if Turner is a non-factor in the passing game.
