QB Jay Cutler: Let Cutler Loose, Get After Stafford by John M. Crist of BearReport.com, October 4, 2009 at 11:53am ET
Jay Cutler Profile
The Lions head to the Windy City from the Motor City coming off a win for the first time in close to two years, but the fact remains that the Bears are a better team on both sides of the football and expected to move to 3-1 on the season.
Offensively, even though fans are clamoring for a struggling ground game to finally get on track, Ron Turner would be wise to let Jay Cutler throw the ball early and often. Detroit has been bad in pass defense for quite some time, and nothing has changed thus far in 2009 – currently 30th in the league. Sure, it would be great to see Matt Forte rack up 100-plus yards on 20-plus carries and start to resemble the player he was as a rookie, but the numbers suggest throwing balance out the window and letting Cutler do his thing.
As for the defense, No. 1-overall pick Matthew Stafford finally stopped turning the ball over last week in a win over Washington, but the Bears can still force him into mistakes since he threw five interceptions in his first two games. It's going to take more than consistent pressure from the front four to rattle Stafford, so look for coach Lovie Smith to confuse him with different looks and lots of pre-snap movement. Anything that can be done to keep Calvin Johnson's touches to a minimum is a good idea, as he's a matchup nightmare for any defensive back.
Even the best teams can lose to the worst teams in today's NFL since the margin between good and bad is razor thin, but look for the Bears to emerge victorious and feeling pretty good about themselves heading into a Week-5 bye.
