WR Johnny Knox: Bears QB Spreading the Football Around by John M. Crist of BearReport.com, September 20, 2009 at 9:48pm ET
Johnny Knox Profile
On a day when Chicago's two starting wide receivers, Devin Hester and Earl Bennett, combined to catch only six passes for 43 yards, QB Jay Cutler still completed 27 of his 38 throws for 236 yards and two touchdowns in a 17-14 win over the Steelers.
Proving that it's more important to have a vasy array of weapons at his disposal than one dominant receiver opponents have to game-plan against each and every week, Cutler had seven different pass catchers record at least two receptions, including two tight ends and two running backs. Perhaps even more impressively, his two TD tosses were the first in the budding careers of Kellen Davis and Johnny Knox, the former not recording a single reception as a rookie and the latter playing Division-II football at Abilene Christian at this time last year. Davis performed well subbing for the injured Desmond Clark, while Knox paced the Bears with six grabs and 70 yards through the air.
Speaking at the postgame press conference, Cutler seemed particularly impressed with Knox and believes he's turned the corner in a hurry.
"He’s developed really quickly, said Cutler. "In two games, he’s really come along. With [Devin Aromashodu] going down in the first week, we were scrambling for who to put in there. We put Johnny in there, and he’s been turning up great. He’s been in the right spot and making adjustments on the move."
Aromashodu came out of nowhere to earn a spot on the 53-man roster and got a lot of praise from Cutler along the way, but with the explosiveness Knox has shown in his first two games as a pro, Aromashodu could become a staple on the inactive list.
