LB Tim Shaw: Urlacher Moved to IR, Linebacker Signed by John M. Crist of BearReport.com, September 14, 2009 at 9:03pm ET
Tim Shaw Profile
With Brian Urlacher, perhaps the toughest piece of the puzzle for the Bears to replace on defense, lost for the year after a wrist injury in Week 1 at Green Bay, all of a sudden the Bears are a little thin at the linebacker postition going forward.
Urlacher had season-ending surgery Monday and was offically moved to injured reserve, so Chicago signed former Jaguar Tim Shaw to add another body to a banged-up depth chart. Originally a fifth-round pick of the Panthers in the 2007 NFL Draft out of Penn State – Linebacker U, as it's known – Shaw has appeared in 17 career games and recorded 17 total tackles. Coach Lovie Smith said veteran Hunter Hillenmeyer is best equipped right now to step into Urlacher's spot at middle linebacker, so look for Shaw to be little more than a special-teams contributor initially.
Adding Shaw was necessary because another starting linebacker, Pisa Tinoisamoa, left the Packers game after two plays from scrimmage and could be out for a while with a sprained knee.
