WR Rashied Davis: Vet Wideout's Absence Spawns Curiousity by John M. Crist of BearReport.com, September 4, 2009 at 2:48am ET
Rashied Davis Profile
If Rashied Davis is supposedly in a battle with the likes of Devin Aromashodu and Brandon Rideau for a spot on the 53-man roster in Chicago, then why was he held out of action Thursday in the preseason finale against the Browns?
With final cuts due to the league office Saturday, this was the coaching staff's final opportunity to evaluate players and determine who is going to be a part of the Midway Monsters in 2009. With receiver considered to be perhaps the weakest position on the team, Davis, Aromashodu and Rideau were all expected to see extended playing time versus Cleveland since one of them will likely fall to the cutting-room floor. Starters Devin Hester and Earl Bennett don't have to worry about job security at this point, and neither do draft picks Juaquin Iglesias and Johnny Knox.
Nevertheless, Davis did not see the field, with coach Lovie Smith saying after the game that the former arena leaguer was banged up to some degree – he also said the decision makers already know what the veteran brings to the table.
There are two ways to interpret this turn of events. First, Davis has already been assured he is on the team, so the coaches wanted to see as much of Aromashodu and Rideau as possible in order to choose between the two. Second, maybe Smith and Co. decided before the game that Davis was not in the franchise's future, so they may as well get all the snaps they can for everyone else. While Aromashodu failed to make a catch, Rideau reeled in an 18-yard touchdown from Brett Basanez on a fourth-down play. The two rookies were tremendous, with Iglesias snaring five passes for 72 yards and Knox recording two grabs for 62 yards – Knox also had a 50-yard kickoff return and a 38-yard punt return.
It's understandable that Matt Forte watched all 60 minutes from the sideline, but with a question mark like Davis unable to audition for his own job one last time, it may be time for him to call his realtor.
