WR Brandon Rideau: Big Receivers on Display Against Giants by John M. Crist of BearReport.com, August 23, 2009 at 10:06am ET
Brandon Rideau Profile
Offensive coordinator Ron Turner said he wanted to get starting receivers Devin Hester and Earl Bennett as many looks as possible in the preseason opener at Buffalo, but Hester only caught two of the six passes thrown his way and Bennett came away with just one reception.
So in the second exhibition game Saturday against the Giants, Turner was hoping to get an extended look at reserves Brandon Rideau and Devin Aromashodu, who had each enjoyed an impressive training camp in Bourbonnais. Rideau, in the NFL since 2005 and a part of the Bears organization in some capacity since '07, is yet to catch a pass in a contest that matters. Aromashodu has spent most of his pro career on the bench in Indianapolis behind Pro Bowlers Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne, although he did record seven grabs in six games two seasons ago.
Rideau and Aromashodu only caught one pass each versus New York, but it was enough to further speculate that both of them have done enough to make the 53-man roster in Chicago when it's all said and done.
On the Bears' second touchdown drive of the first half, Aromashodu made the big play of the series by extending his body to haul in a fade down the left sideline from Jay Cutler for a 38-yard gain and a 1st-and-goal from the enemy 1-yard line. Then just before intermission, Rideau reeled in a bullet of a slant pass from Caleb Hanie on 3rd and 17 for 20 yards to keep the drive alive. Aromashodu is 6-2 and Rideau is 6-3, so the size they bring to the huddle helps balance Hester and Bennett, who are both 5-11.
The 5-9 Rashied Davis, one of the hardest workers on the team yet battling for a job right now, was credited with only one reception for 3 yards and appears to be in danger of ending up on the cutting-room floor.
