WR Juaquin Iglesias: Passing on Barden May Haunt Angelo by John M. Crist of BearReport.com, August 21, 2009 at 2:28pm ET
Juaquin Iglesias Profile
The Bears were considered awfully weak at the wide receiver position heading into this past April's draft weekend, so general manager Jerry Angelo added Juaquin Iglesias, Johnny Knox and Derek Kinder in Rounds 3, 5 and 7, respectively.
However, one pass catcher Angelo decided not to take before trading his second-round pick to Seattle was Ramses Barden, who went midway through Round 3 to Saturday's preseason opponent, the Giants – 14 spots ahead of where Iglesias was selected.
"What else can we say?" writes Ken Palmer, the Publisher of TheGiantInsider.com on the Scout.com network. "Let’s just put him in the starting lineup and call it a day. Barden has so far surpassed initial expectations it’s incredible. He sure looks like he belongs on this level, both on and off the field."
The Giants are replacing both Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer from last year's starting lineup, and while Domenik Hixon and Steve Smith are currently atop the depth chart, Barden has made more noise in the Big Apple than even first rounder Hakeem Nicks so far. Angelo and Co. will get an up-close-and-personal look at Barden on Saturday night at Soldier Field.
"Don’t get too close to the big guy," writes Palmer. "He’s about as hot as anybody after a couple weeks of camp."
Here in Chicago, Iglesias and Knox have each been inconsistent at best, and Kinder is nothing more than a practice-squad candidate.
