The NFC's leading defensive Pro Bowl vote-getter in 2002 established himself as a perennial Pro Bowler by earning his third all-star appearance in as many years, including his second consecutive start, while leading the Bears in tackles for the third straight year and setting a new career-high in the process… One of only seven Bears in history to earn Pro Bowl nominations in each of their first three NFL seasons… First Bears player to lead team in tackles for three straight years since Mike Singletary did so in five consecutive seasons from 1988-92… Has led Chicago's defense in tackles in 22 of the team's last 26 games, including one playoff contest… His 527 tackles through his first three NFL seasons are the most ever for a Bears player to start a career… Became Bears career leader in fumble return yardage on 43-yard return in 2002 (144 yards on five career returns, one TD)… Career awards include: two-time NFC Defensive Player-of-the-Week (10/7/01, 9/15/02), NFC Special Teams Player-of-the-Week (12/23/01) and NFC Defensive Rookie-of-the-Month (Oct. 2000)… Career-high 214 tackles in 2002 stands as the most ever by a Bear since tackle-totals began being recorded in 1971… Registered the first two touchdowns of his career in 2001, one fumble return and one pass reception on a field goal fake… NFL Defensive Rookie-of-the-Year and Pro Bowl selection in 2000, followed by his teammates selecting him as the rookie recipient of the Brian Piccolo Award… Became second Bears rookie ever to lead team in tackles (Doug Plank, 1975)… Drafted in first round (ninth overall) by Chicago in 2000.

Became New Mexico’s first first-round pick since Robin Cole was drafted by Pittsburgh in 1977. Only second defensive player in past seven drafts chosen in first round by Bears (Walt Harris in 1996). Versatile player who played outside linebacker and safety on defense, receiver on offense and return specialist. Two-year starter for Lobos who finished career third on school’s all-time tackling charts with 442 stops. Also had three interceptions, 11 sacks and caused 11 fumbles. Averaged 18.8 yards on five kickoff returns, 15.1 yards on 13 punt returns. Six of of seven catches resulted in touchdowns. As a senior, earned First-team all-America selection by Walter Camp, Football Writers Association of America and Associated Press; second-team choice by Sporting News and Football News. All-Mountain Conference first-team and Player of Year choice. One of three finalists for the Jim Thorpe Award, given to the top defensive back in college football. |
