PRO CAREER: Third-year QB showed off abilities during 2005 season when he established Bears rookie records for games started, wins, pass attempts, completions, yards and tied for TDs while leading Chicago to an 8-game win streak (10/16-12/4), the 2nd-most wins by a rookie QB since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970 (Ben Roethlisberger, 13 in 2004)… His 10 wins set an NFL record for victories by a rookie QB drafted in the fourth round or lower since the common draft was instituted in 1967… Third rookie QB in franchise history to start a season opener (Johnny Lujack, 1948; Zeke Bratkowski, 1954), which made him the seventh different opening-day QB for the Bears in as many years… The NFL's lowest-drafted QB to start a season opener since 2001 (Chris Weinke, CAR) after rising to the starting spot 2 weeks before opening day after beginning training camp as the third-string QB.
CAREER TRANSACTIONS: Entered NFL as a fourth-round selection (106th overall) by Chicago in the 2005 NFL Draft… Signed 4-year contract with Chicago (7/24/05). SIGNED THROUGH 2008
PERSONAL NOTES: Attended Southeast Polk H.S. in Runnels, Iowa, playing football for coach Kent Hortsmann… Ranked as the 2nd-best QB in nation by SuperPrep and listed among USA Today's Super 25 prospects… Completed 208-of-450 passes (46.2%) for 3,176 yards with 24 TDs and 18 INTs during his career… Honorable mention all-state and first-team all-conference choice as a senior after completing 95-of-192 attempts (49.5%) for 1,366 yards with 12 TDs and 5 INTs… Received team's Coaches Award (leadership on and off the field) and Fit-to-Hit Award (player who conditioned himself the hardest)… Connected on 70-of-113 passes (61.9%) for 1,150 yards with 11 TDs and 6 INTs in his junior season… Also lettered in basketball, tennis and track… Named a Student-Sports All-American… An avid Nebraska Cornhuskers fan growing up, wears uniform No. 18 in honor of QB Brook Berringer who led the Cornhuskers atop the polls in 1994 and died in a plane crash (4/18/96)… Born Kyle Raymond Orton… Father, Byron, played football at South Dakota… Named his dog Elaine after the Seinfeld character played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
