One day after KFFL announced that “the Detroit Lions will take Baylor OT Jason Smith with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft,” a source tells Scout.com that the Lions haven’t contacted the representatives for Smith, Georgia QB Matthew Stafford or Virginia OT Eugene Monroe regarding a contract. The source said that the KFFL report was absolutely false.

The source went on to add that he highly doubts that the Lions will select Wake Forest LB Aaron Curry with the top pick, because he doesn’t believe the Lions will invest over $30 million guaranteed in a linebacker.

The Lions made it public that they are seeking to negotiate a contract with an unidentified player who they would take with the No. 1 pick in the draft. On Sunday evening, Pro Football Talk reported a rumor making it’s way around league circles that the Lions are not focused on Stafford, but on USC quarterback Mark Sanchez.

So, could the unidentified player be Sanchez?

Sanchez met with Lions personnel on a few occasions at the Scouting Combine, and Scout.com’s Senior NFL Analyst Ed Thompson recently reported that Sanchez has a visit scheduled with the Lions on April 16th & 17th; a week prior to the draft.

With the Annual Owner’s Meetings taking place in Dana Point, California this week, the Lions are one of the more sought after stories because they own the No. 1 pick and may have an interest in disgruntled Denver Broncos QB Jay Cutler.

“We’re open to all options with that pick,” Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said to NFL.com. “Obviously, it has value to us, and if it has value to somebody else, then we can talk about that."

But at this point, whether or not the Lions have made contact with any of the speculated prospects appears to be in question.
