The Chicago Bears are still looking for their No. 3 QB behind Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton. After not taking one in the NFL Draft, it appears that a pair of undrafted free agents, Caleb Hanie of Colorado State and Nick Hill of Southern Illinois, are on the inside track. Today we take a closer look at Hanie ...

QB Caleb Hanie – Colorado State

The numbers: 6-2, 221 pounds, and 4.96 seconds in the 40-yard dash. In 35 games, completed 495 passes on 811 attempts (59.6%) for 6,337 yards with 39 touchdowns and 34 interceptions.

The skinny: Hanie played relatively well in front of pro scouts at the Texas vs. The Nation All-State Game back in February, going 8-of-13 through the air for 165 yards, although he was intercepted once and sacked four times. In the practices leading up to the exhibition contest, he did not show very impressive arm strength, wasn't able to deliver spirals consistently, and had a slight hitch in his delivery that seemed to hurt his accuracy. Only four NFL teams were represented at Colorado State's Pro Day in March, although Nebraska, which has a track record of breeding NFL talent year after year, scheduled its workout for the same afternoon.

The analysis: Usually a quarterback prospect from a non-BCS program that played inferior competition has to put up ridiculous numbers to be considered for a career in the NFL, but that simply was not the case for Hanie in the defensively-challenged Mountain West Conference. His career touchdown-to-interception radio of 39-34 would leave a lot to be desired even if he had suited up in the SEC, and a completion percentage of 59.6 is also substandard regardless of the fact that he did not have a lot of talent around him in Fort Collins. Another passer general manager Jerry Angelo signed as an undrafted free agent, Nick Hill of Southern Illinois, appears to have a better chance to make it on Sundays – but not much.
