With Bryan Johnson finally being released after a training camp injury last season and J.R. Runnels likely to spend 2007 on injured reserve, the Bears have been looking for depth at fullback. Obafemi Ayanbadejo joined the fray earlier in the offseason, and now Jon Goldsberry has been claimed off waivers. The former Bill and Bucanneer will compete with Ayanbadejo and starter Jason McKie.

Per the Chicago Bears:

LAKE FOREST, IL – The Chicago Bears claimed fullback Jon Goldsberry off waivers from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers today.

Goldsberry joined the Buccaneers practice squad on December 5, 2006 after spending time with the Buffalo Bills in 2005 and during the 2006 preseason. The Santa Claus, IN native entered the NFL in 2005 as an undrafted free agent, signing with the Bills and spending the first 16 weeks of the 2005 regular season on their practice squad before being elevated to the active roster for Buffalo’s season finale in which he was inactive. At Purdue (2001-2004), he saw action in 43 games on special teams, at fullback and as a reserve linebacker.

JC's Take: Make no mistake about it, Jason McKie is the starting fullback on this team and in no jeopardy of losing his job. Obafemi Ayanbadejo was brought in primarily because of his acumen on special teams, not for his limited offensive capabilities. At this point, Goldsberry looks like nothing more than an extra body to take to Bourbonnais for training camp.
