The Bears held their rookie mini camp this past weekend and got to see some of the latest additions up close. Six more undrafted free agents were brought aboard and signed contracts with the team, but Jerry Angelo & Company also decided they couldn't wait around for Airese Currie anymore. The oft-injured, two-year veteran was released by the organization on Monday.

For quite a while now, Bears fans have heard all kinds of stories about the blazing speed of Airese Currie.

Yet after two seasons and a grand total of zero catches in his NFL Career, Currie was sent packing on Monday after being released by Chicago. A mainstay on the injured reserve list, Currie suited up in just one regular season game – the 2006 season-opener – and never recorded a reception. A fifth-round selection out of Clemson in the 2005 draft, Currie is now free to sign with any club.

The Bears did, however, find some fresh talent at this past weekend's rookie mini camp at Halas Hall in Lake Forest. One of the unexpected stars was tight end Fontel Mines, who played receiver at Virginia and caught 68 passes in 30 career games for the Cavaliers. Mines made several tough grabs all three days of practice and earned high praise from head coach Lovie Smith.

"He did a super job," Smith said after Sunday's session. "[He] came out of nowhere [and] really got our attention."

In addition to Mines, the Bears signed five more players on Monday who came to mini camp without a contract as non-roster invitees : RB Josh Allen (Maryland), DT Tory Collins (Northwestern State), CB Greg Fassitt (Grambling), CB Tim Mixon (Cal-Berkeley), and S Andrew Shanle (Nebraska).
