Two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Dre Bly is out with a dislocated wrist that required surgery and will force him to be sidelined for three to four weeks. He had four interceptions through six games.
There are several other players that will miss the matchup with the Bears or have to play through pain.
“The coaches are feeling pretty good,” head coach Steve Mariucci joked when asked the injury status of his players. “Let me think. Um, I was going to say our kickers (have been healthy) but Jason Hanson has had a hamstring, too.
“In football, you know everyone is going to have to deal with this so we deal with it. I think we’re better equipped to handle some injuries this year than we have been before. We’ve got more depth.”
Pro Bowl DT Shaun Rogers is questionable with a right MCL sprain. Without him in the middle, the Lions could have a hard time stopping Thomas Jones, who rushed for 139 yards on 20 carries with Rogers on the field in the 38-6 victory in Week 2.
“Shaun is just walking around and we’ll just see where that goes,” Mariucci said.
Receivers Roy Williams (quad) and Eddie Drummond (knee) are also questionable.
“They’ve done strides and jogging, you know some of those sort of things over on the side last week,” Mariucci said. “Whether they get any practice snaps full speed ahead just remains to be seen.”
Other Lions that missed practice on Wednesday include LT Jeff Backus (ankle) and DT Dan Wilkinson (back).
Despite Thomas Jones rushing for 228 yards the past two games with Roberto Garza in the starting lineup, it doesn’t appear Ruben Brown has to worry about losing his starting job at left guard.
“Ruben is our starter when he's healthy,” Smith said.
Brown hasn’t practiced since suffering a partially torn pectoral muscle against the Browns. He’s still listed as questionable on the injury report and is likely to miss at least another game.
WR Bernard Berrian caught two passes for 15 yards on Sunday, his first receptions since he caught one pass in the season opener. The supposed big-play threat's longest of three receptions this season was for 9 yards. He had surgery on his injured right thumb and is a candidate for injured reserve, although coach Lovie Smith wouldn't commit to that on Wednesday.
The other new additions to the injury report were RT Fred Miller (ankle) and WR Mark Bradley (knee). Both players missed practice, but are listed as probable and expected to play vs. Detroit. Jones (knee) and P Brad Maynard (calf) also sat out Wednesday and are probable.
FB Keith Belton was added to the practice squad, while punter Gabe Lindstrom was waived from the eight-man squad.
