Mannelly Inks Extension

LAKE FOREST - With the start of free agency just over two weeks away, the Bears are taking care of loose ends. On Monday the team agreed to terms on a six-year contract extension with long snapper Patrick Mannelly.

Mannelly, who would have been an unrestricted free agent after the 2005 campaign, is considered among the best at his position. The accuracy Mannelly possesses is one of the reason’s Brad Maynard netted a career high 38.7 yards per punt.

Along with Olin Kreutz he’s the longest tenured Bear being selected in the sixth-round draft pick (189th overall) of the ’98 draft.

The seven-year veteran played in all 16 games for the Bears during the 2004 season, snapping on all punts, extra points and field goals while tying for fifth on the team with 11 special teams tackles.

During his seven years in a Bears uniform he helped Chicago set an NFL record for most consecutive unblocked punts (920) and games without a blocked punt (180), which spanned 13 years but was snapped in 2003.

The 6-5, 265 pounder out of Duke has appeared in 109 games during his seven seasons and has handled long-snapping duties on 1,002 of the Bears last 1,022 punt, field goal or extra point snaps while amassing 57 career special teams tackles.
