Posted Oct 31, 2004

KICKOFF: Sunday, 7:30 CT
GAMEDATE: 10/31/04
SURFACE: Grass
TV: FOX, Mike Patrick, Joe Theismann, Paul Maguire, Suzy Kolber
SERIES: 58th meeting. The 49ers lead 30-26-1, including victories in six of the last seven meetings. The teams last faced each other in the regular-season opener last year, when the 49ers rolled to a 49-7 victory.

San Francisco 49ers (1-5) at Chicago Bears (1-5)

2004 RANKINGS
Bears: offense 29th (17th rush, 30th pass); defense 23rd (30th rush, 13th pass)

49ers: offense 14th (28th rush, 8th pass); defense 13th (17th rush, 14th pass).

KEYS TO THE GAME
QB Thomas Jones early, but Krenzel will have to make some plays downfield to keep the 49ers defense honest.

San Francisco has allowed an opposing passer rating of 102.5. The secondary is beat up despite coming off a bye week, and CB Kevan Barlow, whose inconsistent production has prevented the 49ers from putting together enough sustained drives.

FAST FACTS
Bears: Five losses have been by an average of 6.8 points. ... Defense has allowed nine touchdowns in 24 red-zone possessions (37.5 percent).

49ers: Only seven players have started every game at the same position.

NO LOVE IN PRIMETIME
Tonight's game against San Francisco is Chicago's only primetime game on the 2004 schedule, and will be the first Sunday night home game since Soldier Field's renovation.

After two consecutive years with games on Monday Night Football, the Bears have no games on the league's center stage for the fifth time in the last seven years. Chicago's 48 all-time MNF appearances rank eighth in the NFL behind Miami (69), Dallas (62), San Francisco (59), Oakland (58), Denver (51), Pittsburgh (51) and Washington (51).

The Bears will play in front of a national audience on Thanksgiving Day at Dallas. The game marks Chicago's 32nd all-time appearance in the NFL's original showcase game and first since Nov. 25, 1999 at Detroit, a 21-17 loss to the Lions. Only Detroit (63) and Dallas (36) have played in more turkey day games than the Bears.
