Book Review

Without Bears football on the tube, there’s no better time to curl up with a book about the most historic franchise in the game.

Longtime Bears fans will enjoy a trip down memory lane in Roy Taylor’s “Chicago Bears History.” Covering the Bears from the franchise’s inception in 1920 through the present day, the book focuses on the teams, players, and moments that have defined the franchise.

Taylor, an information technology and telecommunications specialist, began following the Bears after his father took him to a game in 1969.

“I was eight years old at that time,” he said. “After seeing the game, I began following the team on a daily basis, reading every news report I could get my hands on. In later years I became a season ticket holder and have followed the team through the last 25 years.”

Taylor feels that his perspective as a longtime Bears fan will give the reader a unique insight into the legend and lore of this historic sports organization. Among the players interviewed for Chicago Bears History were Bears legends Ed Sprinkle, Doug Buffone, and Ronnie Bull. Taylor also caught up with Cathy Core, the founder of the long ago “Honey Bears’ cheer leading squad.

“I covered subjects that might spark a fan’s curiosity such as: What was it like to play for Mike Ditka? How did George Halas relate to his team? What changes have occurred in Bears football since the beginning of the organization,” Taylor said. “These were all questions I’d had. I wanted to pass on the answers to others who have a similar level of interest in the Bears.”

The book provides a complete journey through 84 years of the Bears accompanied by a selection of archival photographs. It is available at area bookstores or through Arcadia publishing at www.arcadiapublishing.com, 888-313-2665.
