Bears Draft Preview

The Bears were active this off-season but still have big needs going into the NFL Draft.

Chicago Bears
2014 draft picks:
1st round (14), 2(51), 3(82), 4(117), 5(156), 6(183), 6(191)

The Bears were a different team in 2013 under new head coach Marc Trestman but still finished with an 8-8 record. They were all about offense with two different quarterbacks under center in Jay Cutler and Josh McCown. They moved the ball and scored a lot of points. The problem in the Windy City was their defense.

Yeah, things have changed for the Bears under Trestman. Gone now is McCown. So is defensive end Julius Peppers. Chicago will look to rebuild their once proud defense with this draft.

Team Needs

1. Defensive Backs
Chicago needs help across the board on the back end. Look for the Bears to draft at least one corner and one safety and they could even bring in a third and possibly fourth defensive back, depending on how the numbers work out. As things stand now they only have seven picks. Chicago did sign three free agent safeties. They are in great position in the first round to nab a very good prospect at either position.

2. Defensive Tackle
If I were the Bears I would explore trade possibilities with teams ahead of them in the first round so I could target defensive tackle Aaron Donald from Pitt. With only seven picks they don't have much ammo. I mocked Donald to the Bears twice but I honestly don't believe he will still be on the board when Chicago gets on the clock in round one. He's the ideal fit at d-tackle for the 4-3.

3. Linebacker
Lance Briggs isn't getting younger. Jon Bostic from last year's draft class will need to play much better. The Bears defense could certainly use a boost at this position via the draft. Ryan Shazier would be a great addition from round one but Chicago has more pressing needs that early in the draft.

4. Running Back
Matt Forte's insurance policy, Michael Bush, is no longer with the team. It's a good group of running backs in this draft class. At some point look for the Bears to nab a running back with one of their picks.
