Chris Ivory broke out in a big way against the New England Patriots on Sunday afternoon, amassing 104 yards on 34 carries. The workload was by far the most he's had so far this season as he only tallied 34 carries heading into yesterday's game.
"Well, I didn't really know what to expect, but I'm ready for whatever game plan they have. Going forward, whatever they have, I'm going to be ready for it," said Ivory.
The career high number of carries came as a surprise to most people, considering the shared playing time he's split with Bilal Powell so far this season. Powell, who has slowly had his role reduced over the past five weeks, had only three touches on the game, which paved the way for Ivory's big day.
"They didn't tell me anything. I just knew I was in the game. So, I was in the game and I (played) my role," said Ivory. "It helps get in a rhythm and just get more of a feel for the scheme and the running lanes."
Mike Goodson was ruled out for the season in last week's matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers after he tore the ligaments in his left knee. That led to more of an emphasis on the running game, which Ivory greatly exploited. The offensive line constantly won the battle in the trenches against the NFL's No. 31 ranked rush defense, which was without both Vince Wilfork and Jerod Mayo.
Ivory's punishing running style led to consistent rushing yardage for the Jets who were without any dynamism from the four year veteran during the first six week of the campaign. The game plan seemed to include a healthy dose of what Ivory did on the afternoon, which may lead to a bigger role for the rest of the season.
"I think he has confidence in me. "If he didn't, I don't think we would've ran like we did. That's what we did and we came out on top," said Ivory.
The Jets strategy turned ultra conservative in their offense drive in overtime. They ran the ball on 12 of the 13 plays that were called with nine of those carries going to Ivory. Even with the offense depending on his production, he even seemed surprise by the workload.
"No, I didn't. "I didn't expect it at all, especially coming from as far as we did, mentioned Ivory. But we did and we were successful and we sealed the game."
