The Chicago Bears have released tight end Kellen Davis, saving $2.5 million next season.

First reported by Pro Football Talk, the Chicago Bears have waived tight end Kellen Davis. After the signing of Martellus Bennett yesterday, this move comes as no surprise.

Davis signed a two-year deal last offseason yet failed to develop into a consistent pass-catching threat. He finished 2012 with just 19 catches for 229 yards. According to Pro Football Focus, Davis had the second most drops of any tight end in the league last year.

The move will clear $2.5 million in cap space for 2013. His contract included a $2.7 million signing bonus, $1.35 million of which will count toward this year's cap.

After signing Bennett and left tackle Jermon Bushrod, whose annual salary makes him the highest paid offensive lineman in franchise history, this cut was necessary. Yet the club is still pressed up against the cap, so expect more cuts, extensions and restructuring over the next week.
