Former New England Patriot defensive lineman Andre carter has found a new home.
The
Oakland Raiders
signed veteran defensive end
Andre Carter
and cut offensive lineman Joe Barksdale.
The Raiders also added wide receiver Tori Gurley to the practice squad.
The 6-foot-5, 260-pound Carter is a 12th-year NFL veteran, having played for San Francisco, Washington and New England since entering the league as the 49ers’ first-round selection (seventh overall) in the 2001 NFL Draft, just one pick after the Patriots drafted Carter’s new Raiders teammate
Richard Seymour
.
Carter has played in 163 career games with 147 starts, totaling 76 sacks, 23 passes defensed, 17 forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries. His 76 career sacks ranks eighth among active NFL players.
The San Jose native earned his first Pro Bowl selection, named a starter, after totaling 10 sacks with the Patriots in 2011. He tied a New England franchise record with four sacks at the
New York Jets
on Nov. 13, earning AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors, and was credited with 22 quarterback hurries on the season. He played in 110 consecutive games before being placed on injured reserve with a leg injury on Dec. 20, causing him to miss two games and all three of the Patriots’ playoff contests.
Carter has recorded 10 or more sacks in a season four times during his career, including a career-high 12.5 sacks with the 49ers in 2002. He totaled 10.5 sacks in 2007 and 11 in 2009, both with the Redskins.
He finished his collegiate career as California’s all-time leader with 31 sacks, earning unanimous first-team All-America selections from the Associated Press.
His father, Rubin, played for the
Denver Broncos
.
Gurley, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound receiver, spent the entire 2011 season on the Packers’ practice squad after signing as a non-drafted free agent out of South Carolina. He was in training camp with Green Bay this season and was released from the
Minnesota Vikings
’ practice squad on Sept. 18.
