Wright has a pick-six
Bears S Major Wright picked off Rams QB Sam Bradford in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s contest versus St. Louis and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown, the second interception return touchdown of his career. He snagged the football out of the air after it was deflected by CB Tim Jennings. Wright’s first career touchdown came in Week 10 of the 2011 season versus Detroit, a 24-yard interception return.
Wright now has four interceptions in his three-year career, with all four coming in the last two seasons.
It was the 19th interception return touchdown by the Bears under Head Coach Lovie Smith, fourth most in the NFL since 2004.
Bears defense holds St. Louis to six points and 160 total yards
The Chicago Bears defense held the St. Louis Rams out of the end zone and to just six points in Week 3. The Bears have now held St. Louis out of the end zone in their last three meetings. The 160 yards were the third lowest total by a Bears opponent in the Lovie Smith era (145 vs. BUF, 10/8/06, and 147 at CAR, 10/10/10).
The Bears defense held the Rams to 3-of-13 (23.1 percent) on third downs on Sunday and entered today’s action, tied for third in the NFL in third down efficiency (25.0 percent, 6-of-24).
Bush finds the end zone again
RB Michael Bush who started his first game as a member of the Bears in place of injured RB Matt Forte, scored his third rushing touchdown of the season. Bush now has 24 rushing touchdowns in five-year NFL career.
Entering today’s action, Bush’s 17 rushing touchdowns over the last three seasons, were 11th most in the NFL.
Bush finished Sunday’s contest against the Rams with 55 rushing yards and a touchdown on 18 carries (3.1 ypc).
Jenning has fourth interception of the season
Bears CB Tim Jennings picked off Rams QB Sam Bradford in the fourth quarter to seal Sunday’s game for Chicago.
It was the fourth pick of the season for Jennings, increasing his career-high total. Dating back to Week 17 of the 2011 season, Jennings now has an interception in four-straight contests. The last Bears player to have an interception in four-straight was Dave Duerson from Weeks 2-5 of the 1986 season.
Jennings now has seven interceptions in three seasons (2010-12) with the Bears in 35 games played after recording four interceptions in his first four seasons with the Indianapolis Colts (2006-09) in 53 contests.
Jennings also has two pass break ups this season that have led to Bears interceptions, including Major Wright’s pick in Sunday’s contest, in which Wright returned it 45 yards for a touchdown.
Bears defense has six sacks
The Chicago Bears defense had six sacks against the St. Louis Rams in Week 3 and now have 14 on the season. The Bears had entered Week 3 play tied for second in the NFL with eight sacks.
With five sacks in Week 2 at Green Bay, this marks the first time since Weeks 15 and 16 of the 2001 season that the Bears have had at least five sacks in back-to-back contests. The six sacks on Sunday are the most by the Monsters of the Midway since November 18, 2010 at Miami (six).
The 14 sacks by the Bears in 2012 are the most by the franchise in the first three games of a season since recording 24 in 1987 (9 vs. NYG, 4 vs. TB and 11 at PHI).
Bears DE Israel Idonije tied a career high with his first 2.5 sacks of the season. Idonije also had 2.5 sacks on October 10, 2010 versus Carolina. Idonije now has 15.5 sacks over the last three seasons and 21.5 since 2008 in 66 games played after having two sacks in his first 55 career games played from 2004-07.
DT Amobi Okoye, DT Stephen Paea and LB Nick Roach all picked up their first sacks of the season in Week 3 versus St. Louis, as well.
DE Julius Peppers had a half sack and now has 2.5 on the year. Peppers now has 102.5 sacks in his 11-year career and his 102 sacks entering the day were third most in the NFL during that span.
The last time the Bears had 14 sacks over three consecutive contests was Weeks 11-13 of the 2005 season (8 vs. CAR, 4 at TB and 2 vs. GB).
Gould hits three field goals Bears K Robbie Gould connected on all three field goal attempts (54, 22 and 37 yards). Gould has now connected on his last nine field goal attempts of 50-plus yards. Over the last four seasons, Gould is 12 of 14 (.857) on field goal attempts of 50-plus yards.
On the 2012 season, Gould is six-for-six on his field goal attempts.
For his career, Gould is 193-of-224 on field goal attempts (86.2 percent), entering today as the fourth most accurate kicker in NFL history.
