Every NFL team must pare down the roster to 53 players by 8 p.m. CDT tonight. The Chicago Bears had 74 players heading into today and will need to hand out 21 pink slips. It’s a bad day for a lot of NFL hopefuls.
Bear Report is scouring the wire to find out who is going and who is staying. Our running blog below will keep you updated as the Bears finalize their roster.
-WR Brittan Golden, per his Twitter account, will be released. Golden started off training camp strong but faded down the stretch.
-FB Tyler Clutts, per Adam Caplan of FOX Sports, will be waived. Clutts is a quality lead blocker but just didn’t fit in coordinator Mike Tice’s offense.
UPDATE: The Bears have traded Clutts to the Houston Texans for CB Sherrick McManis. McManis (6-1, 195) is in his third season. The 24-year-old is a former 5th round pick.
-CB Isaiah Frey, per ESPN’s Michael C. Wright, will be released. Frey was the team’s sixth-round pick this year. The Bears will attempt to sign him to the practice squad.
-LB Xavier Adibi, per Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, will we waived. The fifth-year player had a strong outing last night but it was too little, too late.
-S Mark Legree, per Biggs, will be released.
-CB Greg McCoy, per Biggs, will be waived. McCoy was the club’s 7th round pick this year. He was drafted for his kick return ability but did not show well in that area during the preseason.
-QB Josh McCown, per Biggs, likely to have his contract terminated. Chicago will go with just two quarterbacks, Jay Cutler and Jason Campbell, this season.
CB Cornelius Brown, per Biggs, will be released.
RB Armando Allen, per Vaughn McClure of the Chicago Tribune, will be waived. Allen was outstanding last night but apparently was beat out by Lorenzo Booker for the club's third running back position.
LB Jabara Williams, per Biggs, will be released. He's expected to be offered a place on the practice squad.
WR Joseph Anderson, per Biggs, will be cut. He is expected to return to the practice squad.
Bears expected to sign QB Matt Blanchard to practice squad. Team released him earlier this week, likely so he wouldn't play in the preseason finale and show other NFL teams his potential.
DE Cheta Ozougwu, based on numerous reports, will make the final 53. Ozougwu had three sacks in the preseason and showed very well as a situational pass rusher.
