The Chicago Bears addressed their need for a pass rusher by selecting former Boise State defensive end Shea McClellin, an experienced player that brings explosiveness off the edge.

The Chicago Bears headed into the 2012 NFL Draft looking to improve the team’s pass rush. To that end, the club selected former Boise State defensive end Shea McClellin in the first round tonight.

McClellin (6-3, 250) is a three-year starter with 38 starts under his belt. For his career, he recorded 130 tackles, 22.5 sacks and 33.0 tackles for loss. He was a second-team All American his senior season.

McClellin is versatile, having played both defensive end and linebacker in college. Chicago GM Phil Emery said he’ll play defensive end for the Bears but they won’t be afraid to slide him all over the field.

At the NFL Scouting Combine, McClellin ran a 4.63 40-yard dash, second best amongst defensive linemen. His 19 bench press reps is worrisome though and brings up questions about his ability to set the edge against the run. He also has relatively short arms (32.75 inches).

Here are his pros and cons:

Pros -Fast off the ball on passing downs.
-Active hands.
-Has quickness to turn corner and close rapidly on the passer.
-Relentless getting after the QB.
-Good arsenal of pass rush moves.
-Effective on slants and stunts.
-Quick feet. Good change-of-direction skills.
-Keeps eyes in backfield when defending the run.
-Good backside pursuit.

Cons -Undersized for a defensive end.
-Lacks ideal upper body strength.
-Too easily blocked against the run. Bigger offensive linemen eat him up.
-Does not disengage well.
-Works hard at point of attack but is too easily moved out of the hole.
-Not a big hitter. More of a drag tackler.
