Bears will host WR Alshon Jeffery

Former South Carolina wide receiver Alshon Jeffery will visit the Chicago Bears at Halas Hall this week. He's a potential first-round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Jeff Dickerson of ESPNChicago.com reported this afternoon that former South Carolina wide receiver Alshon Jeffery will visit with the Chicago Bears this week.

Jeffery (6-3, 216) is a big-bodied wideout that has first-round potential. He has the type of size dominant receivers need at the NFL level. He chose not participate in any drills at the combine, which left a bad taste in many mouths.

At his pro day, he ran in the 4.5 range, although results varied greatly from scout to scout. He also registered a 10-2 broad jump and 36.5-inch vertical leap. His agility drills were only average though and he did not look smooth. His route running was subpar as well.

Jeffery left school after a junior season in which he caught just 49 passes for 762 yards and eight touchdowns. Yet that was mainly due to poor quarterback play. In his sophomore year, he caught 88 balls for 1,517 yards and nine touchdowns.

Jeffery dropped down to 216 pounds at the combine, after playing at more then 230 pounds in college. It appears to have improved his speed, yet it's unclear whether he has the quickness and burst to create separation out of his breaks.

He has ideal size and leaping ability, so he'll be a deep threat from the moment he steps on the field, but the rest of his game needs work. He's a project that will be drafted early due to what he could be, not what he is already.

Mock drafts have Jeffery slated anywhere from a top 15 pick all the way into the middle of the second round.

Despite signing Brandon Marshall, the Bears are still in the market for another playmaking wide receiver in this year's draft. Jeffery is still somewhat of an enigma, so the club likely wanted a closer look to see if he might be worthy of the 19th overall pick.
